American Retirees Head Towards Mexico for Health Care
Many American retirees admit that one reason that they have moved to Mexico is for the health care plan run by the Mexican Social Security Institute. The plan only costs a flat fee of $250 a year, and in return, they receive free medicines, tests, dental work, X-rays, eyeglasses, and no deductibles! With a health care plan like that, it is no wonder that between 40,000 and 80,000 U.S. retirees live in Mexico.

There are some limitations. For example, pre-existing conditions are not covered for the first two years. Some new medicines and implants are also not free. Then there are the facilities. The hospitals aren't cutting edge and do not have many amenities - no TVs or phones in the rooms. Sometimes patients have to bring family members to help with bathing and nonmedical tasks, and most doctors and nurses are only fluent in Spanish. On an even more serious note, the system does not provide much recourse if something goes wrong.

Mexico's health care plan is known for loosing money, so only time will tell how long this deal will be able to last.
