Abortion Policy Change in Heathcare Reform Bill
President Barack Obama's health care bill would change federal policy on abortion. Such a dispute could cause his healthcare reform passage fall short after all his efforts. Major anti-abortion groups such as the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and the National Right to Life Committee say the Senate provisions expected to come before the House shortly are a backdoor taxpayer subsidy for abortion, while other abortion opponents disagree. The House provision would would prohibit health plans receiving subsidies from covering abortions, except as allowed by the Hyde amendment. Women who want coverage for abortion would have to buy a separate policy. Abortions would be allowed with private funds that were collected directly from policyholders and they would write two checks to their health insurance. The check for abortion would be put in a separate account for abortion funds, which would keep the money separate from taxpayer funds.
