Good Samaritan Opens Acute Palliative Care Unit
Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center recently opened a new family meeting room on the Acute Palliative Care Unit. This 11-bed unit is unique, and the only dedicated palliative care unit in Suffolk County, that facilitates an interdisciplinary team approach for any patient facing a life-threatening illness. Palliative care is patient and family-centered care that optimizes quality of life by anticipating, preventing and treating suffering. Palliative care is not limited to the terminally ill or dying. Anyone with a serious, life-limiting or chronic illness can benefit from palliative care. Palliative care can extend from a few hours to several years.
Palliative care is best delivered at the time of diagnosis and involves addressing physical, intellectual, emotional, social and spiritual needs that provide the patient access to information and choices. There is often confusion between palliative care and hospice care, the key difference between hospice and palliative care is that with palliative care, an individual may be receiving active curative therapy. Palliative care includes aggressive symptom management, emotional support and assistance as the patient deals with serious illness.
