Hospital Worker Exposed Patients to Hepatitis C
Former employee of Rose Medical Center, Kristen Diane Parker, has admitted to injecting herself with fentanyl in the bathroom on the job and replacing the syringes for the patients with unclean ones. She had contracted hepatitis C while living in New Jersey in 2008. Rose Medical Center was aware of her condition and counseled her on how to limit her exposure to patients. When found in an operating room she was not permitted to be in Parker quit her job. She tested positive for fentanyl, resulting in the hospital contacting the authorities.
Although they do not believe many patients were exposed, Rose Medical Center is contacting 4,700 patients who underwent surgery during Parker's employment. Nine patients who had surgery during that time have tested positive for hepatitis C. Officials are investigating if they could have contracted the virus from Parker. If she is found to have done serious harm to a patient she can get up to 20 years in prison. If a patient dies due to her actions, she could get life in prison.
