Visit the Doctors Office - Online
Virtual medicine is on its way. Already in Hawaii, doctors and patients are becoming increasingly more comfortable using technology. Hawaii's Blue Cross Blue Shield in January launched its Online Healthcare Marketplace. As to date, around 4,000 patients have signed on and about 1,000 have used it. It allows patients to log in and type in their medical request at any time of the day or night. They are then instantly able to view a menu of specialists who are available at that moment for a virtual visit. Patients have an option of a videoconferenced session with a specialist, a phone consultation, or instant e-mail communication through a secure Web site. All of this at a cost of $10 for a 10-minute visit. Web cameras, instant messaging and other e-technology are in the works to help with high health care costs and scheduling conflicts.
