Closing of NY Hospitals Cause Debate
Caritas Health Care Inc.’s two hospitals in Queens, New York filed for bankruptcy and closed in February. The closing of the two hospitals, Mary Immaculate Hospital and St. John’s Queens Hospital, has caused huge strains on health care in the community. The hospitals had employed around 3,000 people and served 200,000 patients each year. Now community groups are fighting back about not having a say in the decision and the time frame in which the hospitals closed were too fast. One community group in particular is Southeast Queens in Support of Health Services (SQUISH), which called on New York Governor Paterson to sign a bill ensuring that residents have a say in such major decisions.
