Northern Dutchess Hospital Announces Radiology Upgrade
Northern Dutchess Hospital is pleased to announce the installation of GE Healthcare's Centricity PACS, a leading web-based Picture Archiving and Communications System (PACS) to its Medical Imaging department. The new system will help Northern Dutchess Hospital provide improved service to its patients and referring physicians by eliminating the need for traditional x-ray film, while quickly transitioning to an all digital workflow. This transformation will enable radiologists to interpret diagnostic imaging studies digitally instead of using traditional film viewers, producing test results (images and reports) quickly for physicians and patients.

In years past, standard radiology practice was to print, for example computed tomography (CT) exams to x-ray film. Stacks of films were then managed using film folders, file rooms and manual processes, such as hanging film on light boxes or film viewers. In contrast, the latest scanners can produce thousands of images per study, which make it no longer feasible to print and manage the film.

"With PACS, once the radiology exam is completed, our radiologists have immediate access to patient images. Patients will receive CDs that include their imaging exams. Referring physicians may be notified immediately (via e-mail) when the results of their patients' exams are available, and also have secure access to all of their patients' imaging exams online and during patient consultations. PACS-IW results in a revolutionary change in the way we practice radiology" says Linda Mulvihill, MHA, Administrative Director of Diagnostic Services at NDH.
