California to start fingerprinting RNs
The Board of Registered Nurses in California will begin asking nurses who are renewing their licenses to report any and all felony and misdemeanor convictions, even if they have been dismissed, reduced or expunged. This comes because of recommendations from the California Department of Consumer Affairs after a media report investigating the fact that California nurses convicted of serious crimes still hold licenses. Nurses will also have to report cases involving please of no contest or guilty, as well as traffic violations involving alcohol, drugs/controlled substances, injury, or providing false identification.

Starting in mid- to late-November, renewal notifications will inform nurses of the fingerprinting requirement. It is expected that the mandatory fingerprinting will take effect March 1, 2009. The Board of Registered Nurses has received support for the new fingerprinting requirement from the California Nurses Association.

This all comes in light of an article published by the Los Angeles Times, addressing the issue that dozens of nurses who held active licenses in the state of California had been convicted of crimes - including sex offenses, Medicare fraud, and attempted murder. It also provided that California's current law does not seek to revoke licenses until a nurse is convicted of three or more crimes.
