St. Kitts, India, Britain, Belize, Jamaica Recruiting American Nursing Students
American nursing programs turned away about 150,000 qualified applicants for all degree levels last year. With the clinical salary so high, nurses don't want to leave to be teachers. Nursing colleges just cannot compete with the market for experienced nurses that are needed. One way to help with this problem is offshore outsourcing. St. Kitts, India, Britain, Belize, and Jamaica are using the nursing-school shortage as a way to recruit American students. International University of Nursing (IUON) in Kitts has attracted over 20 faculty members from the US with competitive salaries of $70,000 to $80,000 a year, plus overseas tax breaks. In addition, they also have the beautiful island life location. 200 students are enrolled this semester, and the price is $8,800 a semester. This is four times the in-state tuition for an associate degree at a U.S. community college, but many feel that it will definitely be worth it. The American Nursing Association is cautioned by whether IUON can produce qualified nurses. To help with this, IUON nursing students attend classes in St. Kitts for three semesters and then finish their clinical studies at one of the six partner schools in the U.S.
