Low Acceptance Rates to Nursing Schools Despite Nursing Shortage
Even though their is a nursing shortage across the nation, earning a spot in nursing school is a challenge. A student has been declined three times to enter George State University's program. She has a 3.29 GPA, has organized a walkathon to raise money for cancer research, and helps at home with a younger autistic brother. The lack of nursing teachers and classroom space, as well as limited opportunities for field training, are contributors to challenge. For example, GSU recently accepted less than 24 applicants. Schools are having to cut back on applicants even though the demands for nurses continue to greatly increase. Today, hospitals are about 3,000 nurses short in GA. By 2012, it is predicted that they will be 20,000 nurses short.
