New Policy Requires Only RNs to Administer Diastat
The California State Board of Nursing made a policy change on September 10 stating that only a registered nurse at schools can administer Diastat, anti-seizure medication. If no nurse is available, the school must call 911 and have paramedics administer the anti-seizure medication. In the past, school nurses have been trained to administer Diastat, but doing so has caused a liability if something goes wrong. Epinephrine and glucagon are two drugs that can be administered under non-licensed personnel under specified conditions; however, when it comes to Diastat, there no comparable provisions.
This policy is causing a major concern with parents, fearing that the wait for paramedics may be too late to save their child. Medical experts say administering Diastat by non-licensed professionals is dangerous. Others say the nursing shortage is to blame for the new policy.
