UNC nursing school receives grant to improve health-care quality and safety education

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Nursing has received part of a $4.25 million grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to prepare nurses to help improve the quality and safety of health-care systems. The nursing school will receive $1.8 million, while the American Association of Colleges of Nursing will receive $2.45 million. The funding is to support the third phase of the multi-year Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) initiative. The project aims to give nurses the knowledge, skills and attitudes to continuously improve the quality and safety of the health-care systems they work in.

Linda Cronenwett, Ph.D., dean of the School of Nursing, is the UNC project’s principal investigator. Gwen Sherwood, Ph.D., is co-investigator. “Our health-care system has significant safety and quality problems,” Cronenwett said. “To fix that, we need to redesign what and how we teach the next generation of nurses and other health-care professionals so that they understand what goes into ensuring good and safe care, and can identify and bridge the gaps between what is and what should be.”

The initiative is focused on developing six quality and safety competencies: patient-centered care; teamwork and collaboration; evidence-based practice; quality improvement; safety; and informatics. In phase 3, the UNC nursing school and the association will work to develop faculty expertise to teach the competencies; instill the competencies in textbooks and licensing, accreditation and certification standards; and promote continued innovation in teaching the competencies. For more information on the project, go to www.qsen.org.
