Nursing Teacher Shortage at Hartwick College
With 48 nursing students for the fall semester, Hartwick College is at maximum capacity due to the faculty shortage. Jeanne-Marie Havener, the chairwoman of the nursing department at Hartwick College, says that they only receive a handful of applications for teaching positions, and of those, only one or two is qualified to teach.

Hillary Clinton was at Decker School of Nursing at Binghamton University to meet with students, faculty, administrators, and staff. She is co-sponsoring a bipartisan nursing bill that would expand the number of faculty at schools and try to bring more nurses into rural areas. She feels that one of the greatest needs for nurses is in areas like rural New York. Connie Jastremski, the vice president of nursing and patient-care services at Bassett Healthcare, feels that the difference in salaries is part to blame for the difficulty of hiring and retaining faculty. Bassett has nurses who teach and they also have programs in place to encourage high schoolers to go into the nursing profession.
