South Carolina Nursing Schools Try to Reduce Nursing Shortage
South Carolina is predicted to have around 25,900 nurses by 2010; however, the state will need 31,100. By 2020, the state is predicted to have a shortage of 12,100 nurses. The faculty at the Technical College of Lowcountry feel that SimMan mannequins will better fit the needs for nurses and attract nursing students to the area. These state-of-the-art mannequins are extremely realistic - they can even die. The college is also pairing with the University of South Carolina-Beaufort to better serve the area's needs. While USCB is currently renovating its science facilities to create an appropriate lab, the technical college is offering the use of its lab until they have finished renovations. USCB has also added a program for registered nurses with associates degrees to earn their bachelor's degrees.
