Schools Start Back with Nursing Shortage
Jackson Public Schools start back Wednesday, and the offering of school nurses seems like it is still yet to be determined. The school board did not fund seven school nurse positions in this year's budget, and the board gave the superintendent of the school 60 days to find the money. If not received, the school would be one of the 13 schools in the state without school nurses. The National Association of School Nurses recommends one nurse for every 750 students. Jackson Public Schools has one nurse to every 4,300 students. School nurses are a critical part of combating school illnesses, such as the swine flu.
