SEC Investigating Hospital Corporation of America
There is an investigation by the Securities Exchange Commission on whether Hospital Corporation of America, the largest hospital company in the world, has fabricated tens of thousands of payments for fake nursing shifts. Hospital Corporation of America runs over 160 facilities all over the United States and London. This July, HCA's payroll administrator May-Bheemul noticed that HCA received an invoice from a nursing agency for staff supplied in May 2007. The invoice was out of the ordinary due to the lack of reference number, and she was unable to determine who booked the shifts. She approached her superiors and ended up discovering that her computer login had been used 120,000 times in the nurse staffing system to peform such acts as requesting additional staff in the nurse staffing system - none of which had been booked by her. HCA did confirm that her login and password had been used inappropriately. BeforeMay-Bheemul left HCA in 2008, she downloaded the account data and spreadsheets from HCA's system and sent it in to the Serious Fraud Office in London.
