Medicare Cuts Expected to Threaten One in Five Hospitals
In order to pay for the overhaul of the health system, the Senate plans to cut Medicare, threatening about one fifth of hospital and nursing home profits during the next decade. Cutting Medicare would be especially problematic to institutions serving large amounts of Medicare patients; however, Democrats argue that hospitals would rarely cut Medicare programs since it allows them to serve millions of new customers with insurance. The Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus feels that the Medicare savings would extend the financial life of the program by nearly a decade, reducing premiums and cost-sharing or beneficiaries. Republicans feel overall health spending in the nation would increase slightly under the bill.
