Mammogram Debate Over New Guidelines
The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force has adjusted the mammogram guidelines - instead of recommending annual screenings for women 40 and older, it now recommends screenings for women age 50 and older, with screenings every other year. As a result, doctors and patients are outraged, as these routine screenings have saved many lives. There are many false positives for women under 50, which can be stressful as well as costly. Many are also questioning whether the new guidelines have been made to cut healthcare costs as a start to rationed healthcare. Since insurance companies pay for mammograms, many people end up using them, which will reduce the disease as well as reduce medical costs later down the road for expensive cancer treatments.
