Obama Vowes to Overturn HIV Ban
Although the United States currently bars the entry of travelers with visas or anyone seeking a green card based on their HIV status, Obama vowed on Friday to overturn the ban. He then signed a bill to extend the Ryan White HIV/AIDS program. In the United States, there are over one million people live with HIV/AIDS, with over 56,000 new infections each year. The Ryan White HIV/AIDS program provides medical care, medication, and support services to about a half a million people. Obama hopes that by overturning the ban, it will help lift the negative stigma associated with the ban and encourage more people to get tested. He hopes to do so by early next year. There are a dozen countries that currently have the ban in place.
