Hospitals' Methods to Transition to Electronic Medical Records
Congress dedicated around $30 billion of the economic stimulus package to hospitals and doctors to create electronic records. So far, only 1.5% of hospitals have electronic health records and there is not a clear cut path to switching over. The University of Virginia Medical Center has decided to make this transition by using scribes. The scribes use laptops as they take detailed notes as they follow doctors from bed to bed. It is these notes that will form the patient's electronic medical record. The other hospitals have had different methods of switching over to electronic documentation, such as having doctors dictate their notes and then have transcriptionists enter the patient information into a computer. Due to the complexity of patient medical record history, no financial incentives for the transition, and no extra insurance reimbursement, there has been little incentive so far to push the hospitals to change.
