Cholesterol Drugs Helpful with Flu
A new study finds that those that were hospitalized with the flu were twice as likely to survive if they were taking cholesterol-lowering statin drugs. As a result, even though these statins are not proven to cure the flu, it is still a potential alternative to the vaccine. The flu causes damage from inflammation and overreaction by the immune system. These cholesterol lowering statins are also known to reduce inflammation as well. Previous studies have shown that these statins also improve the survival rate of pneumonia and bacterial bloodstream infections.
