First Full Face Transplant in United States
Connie Culp was the first patient in the United States to receive a full face transplant, in which doctors replaced 80 percent of the tissue in her face. It was the most complex functional restoration in the world today. Now, five months after the procedure, she is healthy and has minimal side effects. She still visits the doctors at least once a month to make sure she is still on track with recovery and has a few more minor procedures in place to remove excess skin around her face. It was a gunshot that had originally caused Connie to loose an eye, nose, and part of her jaw.
