Nurse Licked By Dog on Head, Discovers Brain Aneurysm
Nurse Mary Phillips had a headache, but decided to go to the emergency room when her friend's dog entered the room and began licking her right temple as though it was smeared with bacon grease. Doctors discovered that she had a brain aneurysm the size of a walnut. Phillips, a nurse of 14 years, does not mind admitting that she listened to the dog. She said she has watched animals behave in peculiar ways as death drew near: cats refused to leave their dying owners, dogs tried to prevent her from touching patients, and a miniature shark that tried to catapult out of the water as its owner took the his last breath. There have been several studies that linked animals' abilities to point out sickness and death. Researchers at Cambridge University Veterinary School conducted a study in 2004 showing dogs can be trained to recognize and flag bladder cancer. Researchers at Florida State University Sensory Research Institute in Tallahassee showed that dogs could detect melanoma. Two years later, Pine Street Foundation in San Anselmo, California found dogs could point out people with breast or lung cancer. Currently, researchers at the Queen's University Belfast in Ireland determining whether dogs can sniff out changes in the dropping level of blood sugar in diabetics.
