WHO Reports that Women's Critical Medical Needs are Often Ignored
A new report by the World Health Organization states, "Women generally live longer than men, but their lives are not necessarily healthy or happy," and that women are "denied a chance to develop their full human potential because many critical medical needs are ignored." Women usually seek medical services more than men; however, they fail to get the right treatment for violence, depression and problems related to old age. For example, eyesight and hearing loss, arthritis, depression and dementia are often untreated in women.

The report mentioned that childbirth assistance is particularly difficult for unmarried women to obtain health services since many countries do not focus on unmarried women and adolescents. It stated, "Paradoxically, health systems are often unresponsive to the needs of women despite the fact that women themselves are major contributors to health, through their roles as primary care givers in the family and also health care providers." Around 99% of 500,000 women who die each year giving childbirth are in developing countries where medical supplies and skilled workers are in short supply.

Women are more likely to be victims of sexual violence than men, and depression and anxiety is more commonly affected by women. The report said many of shortcomings of women's health is affected throughout income brackets and geographic regions, and that the unequal access to education, employment and fair wages are also contributors of the shortcomings.
