Ginger Helps Chemo Patients Reduce Nausea Up to 40%
After taking ginger three days prior to chemotherapy, cancer patients reported a reduction - up to a 40 percent reduction - in nausea on the first day of chemotherapy. In addition, patients reduced vomiting up to about 5 percent. It is important to note that patients who took low doses of ginger were the most effective; therefore, taking more ginger is not necessarily better. Although previous research had stated that ginger could not reduce chemotherapy nausea, it the timing that makes all the difference: consumption three days before chemotherapy allows the ginger to get a head start at helping nausea.
Ginger can help anyone who is feeling nauseous, and products can easily be found at the grocery store to help reduce systems. However, make sure the products you take contain real ginger root (and not just ginger flavoring). Purified capsules allow easier absorption into the gastrointestinal track. The American Cancer Society recommends eating dry foods such as pretzels and sipping ginger ale when dealing with nausea and upset stomach.
