Study Shows Fetal Memory May Begin By 30th Week
A study of 100 pregnant women in the Netherlands, found that fetuses have short-term memory of sounds by the 30th week of pregnancy. They tested this by watching fetal movement through an ultrasound while they played "vibroacoustic" sound. They found fetuses that would move in reaction to the sound and then repeatedly played it until the fetus no longer reacted to it. Then they would test the memory by playing it again in intervals to see if it "remembered" the sound and did not react. The study shows by the 30th week of pregnancy, the fetus can remember sounds for 10 minutes and by the 34th week it can remember the sound for up to 4 weeks.
