Anti-Smoking Vaccine in the Works from Nabi
Nabi Biopharmaceuticals is trying to develop and anti-smoking vaccine. The vaccine causes the body's immune system to produce antibodies that bind nicotine molecules, making them too large to reach the brain's receptors. The nicotine antibodies would be circulating for long periods of time, which could help prevent smoking relapse. The drug is called NicVax. Nabi Biopharmaceuticals is not the only company to develop such a product - Novartus and Cytos Biotechnology have similar products that ended up failing to meet targets in a middle round of testing.
