Decker School of Nursing Reports on the Nursing Shortage
The Decker School of Nursing at Binghamton University had to turn away 1,228 qualified applicants in 2007 due to the lack of faculty, classroom space and appropriate clinical experiences. The school of nursing also found the following findings regarding the nursing shortage:
-By 2010, there will be at least 16 to 29 percent increase in the demand for nurses regionally. The increase will be 14 to 20 percent nationwide.
-In the state of New York during 2005, the number of RNs that graduated was 6,984 - up from 5,000 in 2002. However, the demand is so high that 10,000 are needed to graduate each year.
According to the federal Health Resource Services Administration, the demand in nurses between 2010 and 2020 is predicted to sharply increase - a consequence of many nurses retiring.
