Despite Dismal Employment Levels, Healthcare Jobs Remain Strong
With U.S. employment low after laying off around 2.6 million jobs last year, the healthcare sector is one of the few that are still seeing the light and is anticipated to be strong through 2016. In 2008, the healthcare sector had a net gain of 419,000 jobs, and among the specific occupations, the number of registered nurses grew the most with a net gain of 168,000 jobs through November. John Challenger, the chief executive of outplacement consulting firm Challenger, Gray, & Christmas in Chicago, states, "There's strong demand for geriatricians, physical therapists and nurses of all kinds." Support work is hot as well, especially as the incoming Obama administration takes up health reform. "A commitment to a new kind of more universal health-care system is going to create a new structure and consequently new jobs." According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, nurses still remain one of the most sought-after practitioners in the healthcare sector and are supposed to have a 23% growth rate in the next seven years. Licensed practical nurses are expected to grow 14%.
