Slow Economy Creates Interest in Nursing Profession for New and Old Recruits
The nurse profession is attracting a greater interest among new recruits, with expanding job opportunities and rasing wages in a ailing economy. The increase in gas and food, along with the prices of houses drastically falling, has caused many nurses to go back to work. Right now it looks like there may be a temporary lessening of the nursing shortage due to the current state of economy. During economic slowdowns, nurses who have designed work schedules to meet their family and work needs, such as reducing their hours when they have a family, go back to work full time. Many part-time or retired nurses are going back to work after a spouse has lost a job. Nursing schools are seeing an increase in people applying; however, schools are still having to turn down thousands of applicants due to the lack of faculty.
To attract nurses, hospitals have increased wages and put more efforts toward recruiting. Hospitals are even trying to persuade older nurses back to work by making their work easier, such as using automatic lift devices to lift beds or putting supplies closer to patients' rooms to reduce walking. Last year, there was a 113,000 net increase of nurses in the work force and most of the added nurses were over 50 years of age. Health care employment has been up 365,000 jobs over the past 12 months.
