Safe Nursing and Patient Care Act Limits The Use of Forced Overtime For Nurses
The State Nursing and Patient Care Act was introduced Thursday by US Representatives in hopes to limit the use of forced overtime for nurses. The American Nurses Association, AFL-CIO, AFSCME, AFT, SEIU, and UAN are all endorsing this bill. Mandatory overtime can be harmful to patients as well as nurses. It drains nurses physically and mentally and the consequences can be even greater for patients. In addition, it could protect nurses from discrimination by employers that continue to force them into working more hours than deemed safe quality care. The Safe Nursing and Patient Care Act would strictly limit the use of mandatory overtime for nurses to situations in which an official state of emergency is declared by federal, state, or local government. This bill would not apply to nursing homes due to the alternative staffing and quality measures for such facilities.
