Increasing Shortage of Nurses a Concern
While already a concern, it appears that many nursing organizations may lack the adequate education in the future if President Bush's fiscal budget for 2008 is carried out. The President has proposed to cut nursing education funding by about 30 percent. The nursing shortage is becoming a nationwide issue, but fortunately there has been an increase in men entering the profession. Nursing has always been a traditional female profession, but in today's world women have more options when choosing a career. Males are becoming nurses today because there are more career opportunities for them. Male nurses tend to be the most interested in the area of emergency, critical care, and anesthesia.
The nursing shortage will only continue to increase, especially when the baby-boomers, which make up most of the registered nurses, start to retire. Government funding has been cut to nursing programs in previous years and has also had an impact on the nursing shortage. The cuts have caused nursing professionals to leave in order to find better paying jobs. As a result, nursing professors have left, and young students are being turned away from nursing programs due to the lack of resources. The large amount of applicants just does not seem to compare with the limited amount of spaces available.
