Nursing Education Returns to Kins County Hospital in 2009
Nursing education will return to Kings County Hospital in 2009 after a $7 million renovation. This is the first time in decades such training will be offered, and it will be under a new program that should help solve the nursing shortage as well as boost low-income New Yorkers. The program is an extension of the Long Island University Nursing School. Scholarships from the non-profit Center for Economic Opportunity are being provided for 40 people a year. The city Health and Hospitals Corp. will send an additional 20 employees to the school every year to become registered nurses. There is also the Nurse Career Ladder program, which gives low-earning New Yorkers help in the nursing industry. 40 more students will receive scholarships through the Center for Economic Opportunity to participate in a 10-month training program at Coler Memorial Hospital to become LPNs.
