Iowa to Take Brunt of Nursing Shortage
By 2020, there is predicted to be a shortage of around 9,000 RNs in Iowa. This is equal to one-fourth of the current workforce! Iowa has an older population, causing high demands of health care services such as long-term facilities. Unlike hospitals in larger areas that have more sources for revenue due to the larger cross-section of the general population, Iowa's primary revenue comes from Medicare/Medicaid, which forces even the mid-sized, urban hospitals to implement hiring freezes in order to cut costs.
