Queens Nursing Shortage and Strategies to Reduce Vacancies
Nursing professionals for some of the hospitals in Queens are having a difficult time in recruiting qualified nurses. Even the recent nursing graduates are hard to retain. They state that it is a daily challenge that requires a proactive approach and specific strategies. For example, Parkway Hospital in Forest Hills is rebounding from bankruptcy. The nursing vacancy rate for the hospital is about 15%. They have tried to lower the rate in several efforts, such as bringing in foreign nurses and hiring about 40 experienced nurses and at least six new graduates in the past six months. About 10% of their nursing staff is predicted to retire in the next five years. The number of licensed registered nurses in New York has increased; however, it cannot match up with the aging nursing population. Maintaining close relationships with Queens nursing schools and of creating practices is being highly emphasized to help attract new nurses. Elmhurst Hospital Center has had success in reducing its vacancy rate from 10% to 2% by using tuition assistance and paid internships to encourage nonnursing staff to pursue nursing degrees.
