Low Pay Plays Role in Public Health Nursing Shortage
Nurses are becoming concerned with the community and population, and they are now going to the patients instead of waiting for the patients to come to them. An in-store setup is common for public health nursing. Many patients enjoy the fact that it saves them the $75 doctor appointment. Unfortunately, the number of public health nurses in the field is decreasing at a time that may need it most with the treats of bioterrism and natural disasters. Along with many other nursing professions, public health nurses are reaching the age of retirement. Public health nurses have low salaries, causing difficulty in finding replacements for retirees. Starting salaries for a public health nurse range from about $36,000 to $ 37,000 per year, while registered nurses at hospitals start at 55,000 per year. In addition, public health nurses have to cope with working with people who face concerns that are often more urgent with their health, such as whether they have food or clothing.
