Nurses Needed in Western North Carolina and Throughout the State
North Carolina has the highest nurse-to-population ratio in the Southeast. In North Carolina, the average vacancy rate is 8 percent. While the nursing shortages are already in Western North Carolina, they are not as high as in other parts of the country - the average vacancy rate in the nation is 8.5 percent. The North Carolina Center for Nursing predicts that by 2020, North Carolina will need 30 percent more nurses than it will have. While the number of nurses in the state continues to grow each year, the population is growing faster than the amount of licenses issued and nurses are getting older. 31 percent of all licensed RNs in North Carolina are over 50 years old. The demand for nurses is predicted to increase due to people having more chronic health conditions and as nurses reach retirement age. Western North Carolina might have more of a demand due to its large retirement population - 18 percent of the population is 65 years or older, while the nationwide percentage is 12 percent.
