Veteran Affairs Plan for Nursing Shortage
Longer life expectancy and aging baby boomers has caused an increasing need for nurses, now and in the future. The first way to solve this problem that comes to mind is to recruit more nurses. However, recruiting nurses is more difficult that it appears. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing has reported that over 42,000 qualified applicants were turned down from nursing schools last year. Why? Because of lack of capacity. The department of Veterans Affairs has a new plan to help with this problem by establishing a virtual VA Nursing Academy. VA is one of the largest employers of nurses in the world and has more than 60,000 nursing personnel. In order to train more nurses, it will partner with 12 nursing schools from across the country for the next three years.
