Nurses Needed in New York and Throughout the Nation
Due to the nursing shortage, registered nurses are one of the most sought-after health care professions. Within the next five years, it is estimated to be the fastest-growing industry nationwide. The most recent survey conducted stated that in New York, there were 3,700 vacancies in city hospitals and 20,000 vacancies nationwide. Some of the factors for the shortage include the age of the average nurse, lack of faculty to teach at schools, and lack of men in the profession. There are not enough young nurses entering the work force and many baby boomer nurses will be retiring. According to the American Nurses Association, the average nurse is 46.8 years old. However, that age will soon be over 50. Enrollment in nursing schools have been very high, but the schools are unable to accept many applicants due to lack of faculty. The stereotype of male nurses still influences males entering the profession. The number of men in the profession is less than 6%. Johnson & Johnson has created a "Campaign for Nursing's Future" advertisement that was designed to be guy-friendly. However, most other advertisements are still more targeted towards females. New York City is predicted to have a shortage of 25% of its positions in 2020.
