Lack of Qualified School Nurses
Students are being put at risk due to the lack of full-time school nurses. Such a problem also increases the burden of current school nurses by making them have to work with more students, as well as students that have more serious health needs. While some tasks can be as basic as giving a student an ice pack, others are more complex, such as helping diabetics and giving immunizations. The federal guidelines are one nurse for every 750 healthy students. However, about a dozen states reach that level in the U.S. Some states have dedicated funding to help increase the amount of licensed school nurses. With 13 percent of students taking prescribed medication and 12 percent having asthma, there should ideally be a nurse in every school.
