President Bush's New Budget Could Potentially Make the Nursing Shortage Worse
With the nursing shortage increasingly becoming a critical issue in the future, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) feel that the recommended cuts to nursing education programs contained in President Bush's FY 2006 budget would only make matters worse. Bush has requested a $44 million decrease in funding for Nursing Workforce Development Programs, and a $125 million decrease in funding for Health Professions Education Programs. Such actions would eliminate Advanced Nursing Education Programs and cause the endangerment of being able to provide the proper health care services to those in the U.S. On a more positive note, the AACN was pleased to hear about a $1 million increase for the National Institute of Nursing Research and $11.3 million increase for Agency Healthcare Research and Quality. There is also an expected $13 million increase in the Nurse Repayment and Scholarship Programs that target preparing entry-level nurses. A major concern regarding this issue is the lack of faculty and staff to teach qualified students. This has become a problem in nursing schools today, where the schools are having to turn applicants down because of lack of teachers.
