Joint Commission Made Deeming Authority for Critical Access Hospital Accreditation
The Department of Health and Human Services' Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) has made The Joint Commission the deeming authority for the accreditation of critical access hospitals. This means that critical access hospitals accredited by The Joint Commission can choose to be deemed as meeting Medicare and Medicaid certification requirements. Critical access hospitals have 25 or fewer acute care beds and have an average stay of 96 hours. Accreditation and the deemed status through accreditation are not requirements. The Joint Commission also has federal deeming authority for ambulatory surgery centers, durable medical equipment suppliers, home health, hospice, hospitals and laboratories.
