Joint Commission Considers New Proposed Requirements for Effective Communication, Cultural Competence, & Patient-Centered Care
The Joint Commission is proposing new requirements to address effective communication, cultural competence, and patient-centered care for hospitals. The growing diversity in our country can make it difficult for nurses to communicate with their patients. Also different diseases or disabilities call for better communication skills. Although these skills are already supported by other requirements, the Joint Commission feels there needs to be further improvement for patients. The earliest the new requirements can be implemented is January 2011.
