Hiring Nurses from Mexico Could Ease Shortage
With the critical need for bilingual medical personnel and the shortage of nurses in states such as California, there is a great potential for Mexican nurses to work in the United States under the North American Free Trade Agreement. However, only a few have tried and only a small amount of those have actually been successful. With English as their biggest challenge, they lack the ability to work at U.S. hospitals. Another difficulty for Mexican nurses is the attitude of potential employers, who do not want to hire them because they think the quality is less. In addition, there is a lengthy screening process for foreign nurses. This process evaluates the credentials by state nursing boards or the nonprofit Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools. An English-language proficiency exam must be passed for nurses from non-English-speaking countries. Out of the 15,859 foreign-educated nurses who passed the U.S. licensing test for RNs on their first try in 2006, only 21 were schooled in Mexico - and those 21 were among 92 first-time test takers from Mexico.
