Nursing Crisis Expected to Reach 260,000 in 2025
There has been a nursing shortage in America for years. Although the nursing profession has benefited from the recession by prompting new nurses to sign up for school and the older nurses to postpone retirement, it is expected that by 2025 the United States will have a shortage of 260,000 Registered Nurses. It is predicted that in a few years four out of ten nurses will be over the age of 50. Then in a decade they will be retiring. As the demand will continue to grow, these nurses will not be able to be replaced. With the lack of nursing professors and capacities at schools, another way will need to be found to bring more nurses into the profession. One quick short term solution would be to loosen immigration restrictions on foreign healthcare workers; however, it is predicted that doing so would affect foreign nurses taking American jobs because the foreign nurses would just be filling vacancies that already exist and cannot be filled by nurses currently in training.
