Rhode Island Goes Abroad to Find Nurses
It is hard not to notice that if you are in a hospital today, more of the nurses are beginning to have a foreign accent. To help fill the nursing shortage in the US, hospitals have begun to look overseas for trained and experienced nurses. There are 79 foreign-trained nurses out of 20,553 nursing licenses in Rhode Island. At Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, there are currently around 20 foreign-educated nurses working. Kent Hospital, located in Warwick, has 31 foreign nurses. However, this trend is growing, especially nationwide. Out of those who took the qualifying exam for a nursing license last year, 12 percent were educated overseas. This increased trend brings many concerns such as going overseas to solve a domestic problem and the effects on the nations whose these best nurses are being taken from.

Before working in the US, foreign nurses have to get cleared by the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools. There, a course-by-course check of their schooling is conducted in order to make sure the education is identical to an American-trained nurse. Then, they have to take a nursing proficiency test, and English test, and the NCLEX licensing exam.
