Healthcare in Sierra Leone
Although living standards are continuing to improve throughout the world, such a movement has bypassed sub-Saharan Africa. Even with over $1 trillion in foreign aid, the people are poorer and less healthy than before. With a shortage of medicine, trained doctors, reliable electricity, and clean water, West Africa is a major concern to world health officials.
Sierra Leone's has only two pediatricians for the whole country. When it comes to obstetricians, they only have four. The government salaries are at a remarkable low - doctors make around $100-$200 depending on their specialty and experienced nurses make $80. These salaries are some of the lowest in the world.
Doctors negotiate the pay with the patients before treatment. The doctors then share that money with nurses and aides. If the patients do not pay, the doctors have to give the nurses money from their own pockets in order for them to show up. They have a free medical treatment policy; therefore, they have to treat anyone who shows up whether they pay or not.
