Filipino Nurses Taking NCLEX Decreases
Due to the recession, the interest to seek employment in the United States has decreased for Filipino nurses. In 2008, there were 9,837 Filipino nurses who took the NCLEX for the first time within a 6 month period; however, within the same 6 month period in 2009, there was only 8,272 Filipino nurses who took the exam. The yearly number of nurses who took the exam was down 3.5 percent. The other top four countries providing foreign nurses to the United States are Canada, India, Korea, and Cuba. The number for these countries had decreased as well. The number of Canadian nurses taking the NCLEX the first semester decreased 36 percent. India had decreased 56 percent, Korea decreased 36 percent, and Cuba decreased 36 percent.
