Shriners Hospitals May Remain Open
The Shriners fraternity voted to withdraw a measure that would have closed six of the Shriners Hospitals for Children. They also voted to reopen the Galveston, Texas Hospital that closed after Hurricane Ike flooded it. Although they voted for the hospitals to stay open, the delegates still have to determine how to keep the hospitals in operation during the difficult economic times. Delegates are considering alternatives to closures, including partnerships with non-Shriners hospitals. The Shriners hospitals currently pay for everything and do not accept insurance. A possibility the delegates are considering is accepting insurance or Medicaid from families that have them but cover co-pays and deductibles. The convention closes on Thursday with a press conference afterwards to address questions.
