Nurse Experiences Fame on Deal or No Deal Game Show
Margarita Montijo, a 30-year-old nurse from Phoenix, had an experience of a lifetime as a contestant on the hit NBC game show Deal or No Deal. Everything was incredible - from the day she tried out for the show to the flight to Los Angeles. "I thought it was a dream the entire time," she said. "I felt like a celebrity when I got my hair done and got a makeover. When I turned around, I felt like Miss America." Montijo filled out an application and began thinking about what to put in her audition video, when she saw that Fort McDowell Casino was holding a casting call. But getting to hang out with host Howie Mandel was not an easy feat. Montijo battled with 12,000 game-show hopefuls at the casino on April 10, even camping out the night before. After receiving a callback, Montijo brought a clan of 13 to meet producers, though finalists were asked to bring only two to seven people. Her energy and compassionate nature sparked interest, and in October, she received the call she was waiting for. In the middle of helping to deliver a baby. Montijo said the first few moments of her appearance were the most petrifying. "It was nerve-racking, and I literally thought I was going to throw up," she said. "When you see it on TV it is so fun, but it's really an out- of-body experience. . . . Your mind doesn't really understand that it's real money and it sucks you in. You become a crazy maniac person." Montijo cannot disclose how much, if any, money she won. But to her, that wasn't the point - just being there made her feel like a winner.
